College Men’s Basketball Final: Virginia Wesleyan 67, Guilford 58

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Lamont Steward scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds as Virginia Wesleyan College rallied for 67-58 at Guilford College on Saturday afternoon.

VWC improved to 15-8 and 9-5 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The Quakers fell to 13-10 and 9-5 ODAC.

The Marlins trailed 39-30 at halftime. A combination of solid VWC shooting and cold shooting by the Quakers in the second half was the difference. After shooting 16-26 (62-percent) in the first 20 minutes, the Marlins held the Quakers to 5-30 (15-percent) shooting. Virginia Wesleyan was 21-57 from the field (47-percent) for the game.

Virginia Wesleyan outscored Guilford 16-4 over the first ten minutes of the second half. After a three-pointer by Keijohn Honore with 10:46 remaining, the Marlins gained a 46-43 edge and never trailed again.

GC’S Marcus Curry tied Steward for high points honors with 19. He was 7-8 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Kyler Gregory came off the bench to contribute 10 points and seven rebounds for the Quakers.

Steward was 6-13 shooting, made 5-6 free throws and had two blocked shots. VWC had six blocks in the contest. The Marlins forced 19 turnovers, which resulted in 21 points. Honore and Percy Burt both recorded nine points for the visitors.

Guilford led in rebounding (45-33) and paint points (36-22), but trailed in bench points (33-14).

Coach Tom Palombo’s Quakers play at Lynchburg College on Wednesday (2/14) at 7 p.m.
