College Women’s Basketball Final – Guilford 98, Randolph-Macon 82

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Lauren Ramsey (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) led four Quakers in double-figure scoring with a career-high 27 points in Guilford College’s 98-82 basketball upset of Old Dominion Athletic Conference co-leader Randolph-Macon College Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets (17-5, 10-4 ODAC), ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III South Region Poll, got a game- and career-high 45 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks from Division III scoring leader Kelly Williams, but wearied down the stretch. Guilford (15-6, 9-5 ODAC) shot a season-high 55.6 percent from the floor and outscored Randolph-Macon, 31-20, in the decisive fourth quarter.

Guilford led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before settling for a 45-36 halftime lead. Both teams shot over 54 percent from the floor in the first half, but 12 Randolph-Macon turnovers proved the difference. A Miracle Walters (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) bucket two minutes into the second half opened a 52-38 Guilford edge, but Williams and the Yellow Jackets awoke.

Teal Reynolds scored six straight points and Randolph-Macon reeled off 10 unanswered points to rally within 52-48 with 5:41 left in the third. After Guilford’s lead swelled to eight, Williams scored 11 points in a 14-4 Randolph-Macon run which put the guests ahead, 62-60, with 66 seconds left in the quarter. It proved the visitors’ final lead of the second half and lasted only 31 seconds. Brianna Allen’s (Durham, N.C./C.E. Jordan) three-pointer at the other end restored a 63-62 Quakers’ lead.

Guilford scored the third quarter’s final seven points and carried the momentum into the final stanza. Ramsey’s three-pointer capped a decisive 16-3 Quakers’ spurt that spanned the frames. Ramsey’s triple opened a commanding 76-65 margin with 6:44 left in regulation. The Yellow Jackets, which played just eight students, drew no closer than eight points for the rest of the contest.

Ramsey made 13-of-17 shots from the floor in the highest-scoring game by a Quaker this season. She also dished out a team-high eight assists and added four rebounds. Jasmine McBride (Lumberton, N.C./Lumberton) netted 15 points and shared game-high honors with 12 boards for her first college double-double. Walters and Essence Abraham (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) also tallied 15 points as the Quakers set a season scoring high. Rookie center Monell Dunlap contributed nine points and six boards in 20 minutes off the bench. The Quakers held a 37-28 rebounding edge and shot 11-for-16 (68.8%) from the floor in the fourth quarter.

Randolph-Macon’s Williams made 18-of-26 shots from the floor, including her first three-pointer of the season. Reynolds added 17 points, nine assists, and a game-high three steals. Kelsey Wisner had six points, five assists and two steals.

Coach Stephanie Flamini’s Quakers visit Randolph College Wednesday (2/14) in a 7:00 p.m. ODAC game.
