Elon Track and Field Sets School and Personal Records at Liberty Elite Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three event victories and four qualifying marks for the 2018 Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships capped off the Elon University women’s track and field team’s day at the Liberty Elite Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 10. Elon also saw junior Katie Arbogast set a new school-record in the 500-meter run and several others tie or set personal-marks inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

RESULTS

Arbogast clocked a time of 1:14.82 in the 500-meters as she crossed the line third overall in the race. That time also qualified her for the ECAC Indoor Championships and broke Jen Esposito’s previous program-best time of 1:15.63 from 2015. Newcomer Gabriela de Oliveira Varisco was fourth in the race with her time of 1:19.98 – fifth on the program’s all-time list.

Melissa Anastasakis won the title in the one-mile run, clocking a time of 4:56.80 in the race. The Hillsdale, Ontario, native qualified for the ECACs in the race, the second event that the sophomore has qualified for individually for the championship meet. Natacha Savioz was Elon’s top runner in the 1,000-meters as she won the event with a time of 2:57.67. Emily Smith was second with a 2:59.52 while Paige King was third at 3:00.36.

Coralea Geraniotis also qualified for the ECACs after winning the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:22.63. Brigid Brennan was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run after clocking a time of 10:02.30 in the race.

In the pole vault, Ellie Bennett tied her personal-best with a cleared height of 11′ 5.75″ (3.50m) and was 10th overall. Teammate Nicole Karabas was 11th at her mark of 10′ 11.75″ (3.35m).

Bryanna Hames was fourth in the shot put with her heave of 48′ 10″ (14.83m). Skylar Barthelmes was just outside of the top-10 with her throw of 42′ 1.25″ (12.83m). In the weight throw, Barthelmes and Hames tied with a toss of 50′ 6.75 (15.41m) while freshman Charlotte Bradsher set a new personal-record with her mark of 50′ 0.50″ (15.25m).

Melody Burke was fourth overall in the triple jump with her leap of 37′ 8.75″ (11.50m). She was also Elon’s top finisher in the high jump at a cleared height of 5′ 1.75″ (1.57m).

Elon concludes its indoor regular season next week at the UCS Invite on Friday, Feb. 16 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
