Elon Women’s Tennis Bounces Back with Win over Troy

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Erica Braschi’s win at No. 2 singles helped Elon University women’s tennis’s bounced back and earn a 6-1 win over Troy on Saturday, Feb. 10, at the Crosswhite Athletic Club.

After the Elon (4-3) dropped the doubles points, the Phoenix roared back winning all singles matches for the win. Braschi clinched the victory for the Phoenix (4-3) at No. 2 singles, picking up the 50th dual match singles win of her career with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Troy’s (0-3) Efriliya Herlina.

“I am proud of how hard the team bounced back today,” said head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “They competed with relentless determination to beat a strong Troy team. We are looking forward to playing back at home again next weekend.”

HIGHLIGHTS
Troy rallied in doubles to win the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. After Montana Mooreand Braschi earned a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles to give Elon the advantage, the Trojans bounced back as Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky knotted up the point with a 6-4 victory on the top court. Jiayuan Xue and Herlina both completed Troy’s doubles comeback with a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 position.

The Phoenix rebounded at the start of singles play as Suzanne Zenoni knotted up the match at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Xue. Alex Koniaev continued Elon’s strong play in singles, defeating Karaky 6-2, 6-2, to give the Phoenix a 2-1 advantage in the match.

After falling in her first set 1-6, Olivia Lucas rebounded taking each of the next two sets 6-3, 6-4 against Ohta to put Elon ahead 3-1 in the match.

Braschi then clinched the match at the No. 2 singles position. After the senior won the first set 6-2 and dropped the second set 5-7, she answered with a 6-2 in the third set to clinch the team’s win.

Maria Paraja and Montana Moore completed Elon’s win with victories on courts five and six, respectively.

The Phoenix returns to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, Feb. 17-18, for three matches in two days. Elon begins the weekend with a doubleheader against Catawba and Winston-Salem State on Saturday, followed by a matchup against VCU on Sunday.
