FAYETTEVILE, N.C.– The Greensboro College women’s basketball team defeated the Monarchs of Methodist University Saturday, 67-50, to clinch a share of the USA South Athletic Conference East Division Regular Season Championship.

The Pride started out the contest by forcing seven turnovers and taking a 15-9 lead at the end of the first period. Rasheika Gregory, who finished with a team-leading 12 points and seven rebounds, cashed in seven points, while Laprecious England had five points.

Methodist then cut the Greensboro advantage to four-points on their first possession of the second period before the Pride went on a 12-2 run to establish their largest lead of the half at 27-13 with 6:26 showing on the clock. This time it was Shaniah Haynes fueling the run with four points, while Katie Lewis, England and Lauren Jenkins combined for eight points.

Despite holding on to the 14-point, the Pride struggled over the next eight minutes as the Monarchs were able to pull within four points just one minute into the third period, following a 14-4 run.

However, Greensboro quickly regained a double-digit lead after a 14-7 run that lasted 6:34.

After the run to gain a 45-34 advantage, the Monarchs tried to pull close once again, but would get no closer than eight points.

With the Pride leading 55-45 with 6:38 to play, Greensboro went on a 14-5 run over the final 6:20 to secure the 17-point victory.

“It was a pretty good game for us today,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We played great at times, but we also had some periods where we lost our focus.

“However, we were able to get the win and bring another regular season conference championship to the women’s basketball program.”

England also finished with 12 points and a team-leading four assists, while Lewis tallied 11 total points.

The Pride women will return to action in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday at home. They will take on the winner of No.4-East N.C. Wesleyan College and No.5-East Salem College in Hanes Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
