HPU Track and Field Assistant Houston Wins USATF Pole Vault Championship

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — High Point University track and field assistant coach Scott Houston captured the national title in the men’s pole vault Saturday (Feb. 17) at the USATF Indoor Championships in the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Houston won his first national title by clearing a personal-best height of 5.83m (19-1.5), defeating defending World Champion Sam Kendricks and Mike Arnold, who cleared 5.78m (18-11.5). Houston now ranks seventh in the world this year in the event.

With his win, Houston will represent the United States at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, to be held March 1-4 in Birmingham, England.

HPU Class of 2016 graduate Austin Miller placed ninth in the event, clearing a personal-best height of 5.53m (18-1.75).
