Softball Splits Final Two Games At Piedmont Classic

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Greensboro College softball team split their final two games of the Piedmont College Classic Sunday.
The Pride dropped their first game of the day to Centre College, 4-3, before topping the host Lions in the nightcap, 4-2.
Game 1: Centre College
The Pride were able to score the game’s first two runs in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Kaylee Johnson led off the inning with a double down the right field line before coming in to score on a Melissa Garcia single. Prior to Garcia’s single, Allyson Loy drew a one-out walk before advancing into scoring position on a stolen base.
With Garcia standing on first base after the single, Loy advanced home on a Colonels error.
Greensboro was then able to maintain their two-run advantage until the fifth inning when Cayleigh Norton laced a double to center field to score Lilly Baucom, extending the Greensboro lead to three runs.
However, Centre scored the game’s final four runs to take the one-run victory.
Garcia finished with a game-high three hits, while Johnson, Taylor Little, Loy and Norton had one hit each. Despite recording nine strikeouts, Cheyanne Cox was credited with the loss.
Game 2: Piedmont
Piedmont took a one-run lead in the top half of the second inning before Greensboro awansered right back with a run of their own in the bottom half to tie the game.
Norton led off the inning with a walk before advancing into scoring position on a Regan Lockwood walk. Norton then came in to score on a Baucom double.
The score then remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when Piedmont regained a one-run lead.
However, Greensboro was able to respond right back with three-runs to secure the 4-2 victory.
After Hayley Tickle and Lockwood reached safely to start the inning, Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Tickle.
Later in the inning, Greensboro tallied their final two runs on a Piedmont error.
Garcia once again led the Pride with two hits. Maddy Wetherholt earned the victory after pitching six innings of two-run ball, while Cox earned the save.
