College Baseball Finals: Guilford 5-12, Lasell 4-5

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College swept Lasell College in a baseball doubleheader at McBane Field on Thursday. The Quakers (9-6-1) took game one, 5-4. In the nightcap, GC prevailed, 12-5.

The first game was tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mitchell Stumpo doubled and was brought home by a double by Trevor Denton (2-4) for the winning tally.

The Lasers had bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, but Bailey Garfield struck out Tyrek Robinson to end the game. Garfield earned the save. Ryan Hill (1-0), who pitched the sixth inning, earned the win for Guilford.

Lasell (0-5) had nine hits to GC’s eight. Jesse Trejo, David Marsell and Andre Marchesseault all had two hits for the Lasers. For Guilford, Josh Shepherd went 2-4 with two doubles and scored twice.

In the second game, the Quakers trailed 5-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning. Yet GC plated nine runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Shepherd (2-4, 2 runs). Lasell gave up five walks in the frame. Four runs scored on wild pitches and two others were forced in via walks.

Mitchell Stumpo went 2-3 with a triple and scored twice for the Quakers. Giovanni Garcia hit 2-3 and also scored two times. Tanner Hobbs (1-0) pitched a perfect fifth inning and earned the win for GC.

For Lasell, Brett Sherron went 3-4 with a double. Laser starting pitcher Sean Dorris (0-1) took the loss. He pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (four earned).

The Quakers return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Randolph Macon College.
