College Baseball Final: Randolph-Macon 4, Guilford 1

ASHLAND, Va. — Ryan Duphorn hit 2-3 and drove in the winning run as Randolph-Macon College defeated visiting Guilford College, 4-1, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-2 and 3-0 in league play. The Quakers fell to 9-7-1 and 1-2 in ODAC action.

GC scored its run in the top of the first inning after Trevor Denton singled through the left side to bring home Josh Shepherd. Shepherd had a base hit to lead off the game and was moved over on a single by Mitchell Stumpo.

The Yellow-Jackets, however, responded with a tally in the bottom of the first. Duphorn lead off with a single and was brought around on a base hit from a Rick Spiers base hit to centerfield.

The game became a pitcher’s duel as no team scored over the next five frames. R-MC broke open a 1-1 contest with three runs in the seventh inning. Duphorn scored Michael Nickles on a fielder’s choice. Cole Migliorini later singled in two Yellow Jackets for the game’s final runs.

For Guilford, Denton (3-2) started and took the loss. He pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowed eight hits and all four Randolph Macon runs. He struck out two batters before Rhett Miller tossed a perfect final 1 1/3 innings for GC.

Colin Selby moved to 4-1 on the season after hurling eight innings and getting the win. He fanned nine Quakers and allowed two walks. Christian Cox pitched the ninth inning and garnered his first save of the year.

Randolph Macon outhit Guilford, 8-5. There were no extra-base hits in the contest.

The two teams play again on Sunday at R-MC. Game time is 1 p.m.
