College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford’s Mishoe Shares Individual Lead After 18 Holes at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Guilford College sophomore James Mishoe (Cary, N.C./Green Hope (UNC Greensboro)) shot a five-under-par 67 to share the individual lead after Friday’s opening round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. Mishoe’s play helped the Quakers shoot 294 as a team, good for a three-way tie for sixth place in the 30-team field.

Ranked fourth in the current Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Head-to-Head Ratings, Illinois Wesleyan University fired an even-par 288 Friday on the par 72, 6,700-yard Pine Lakes Course of the Jekyll Island Club. The Titans hold a two-stroke edge over unranked Kenyon College. Number-22 Southwestern University (291), ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University (292), and number-five Methodist University (293) round out the top-five teams.

Mishoe started strong with birdies on his first two holes, but made the turn at one over after bogeys on three, six, and nine. He caught fire down the stretch with consecutive eagles at 15 and 16 and birdies on the final two holes for a 67. Mishoe and Oglethorpe University’s Jacob Arnett have a one-shot edge over the rest of the 150-man field in one of the spring’s largest NCAA Division III Tournaments. Kenyon’s Ryan Muthoria and Lawrence Courtney are part of a three-way tie for third place at 68 (-4).

Guilford’s Zach Evens and Louis Lambert both carded 75s Friday and share 43rd place individually. Josh Hill’s five-over 77 provided the 14th-ranked Quakers’ fourth score of the day and sits 77th among individuals. Guilford’s Harrison Frye fired an opening-round 80, good for 115th place.

The 54-hole tournament, which features 13 of the top-20 teams in the Golfstat.com rankings, continues Saturday and Sunday.
