JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – Guilford College sophomore James Mishoe (Cary, N.C./Green Hope (UNC Greensboro)) shot a 10-under-par 206 over 54 holes to win the 150-man Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Sunday at the Jekyll Island Golf Club. Mishoe, a sophomore who joined the Quakers in January, claimed his first college medalist honor and is Guilford’s second tournament medalist this season.
The three-day event included 13 of the top-20 teams ranked in the latest Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Head-to-Head Rankings. Guilford is 14th in the Golfstat.com ratings and 13th in the latest Bushnell Golfweek Division III Coaches’ Poll.
Mishoe’s title helped the Quakers place second in the 30-team field with a three-day total of 864. The even-par score stands third in school history for 54 holes. Fifth-ranked Methodist University blistered the par-72, 6.700-yard Pine Lakes Course with an 11-under 853 over 54 holes, including a 10-under 278 Sunday that swelled the Monarchs’ five-shot lead over Guilford after 36 holes. Second-ranked Huntingdon College carded Sunday’s second-lowest team total (282) and finished in third place at 869. Number-22 Southwestern University and seventh-ranked Emory University shared fourth place at 870.
Mishoe, who led from wire-to-wire, started Sunday with a one-stroke lead over Kenyon College’s Lawrence Courtney and Southwestern’s Cade Osgood. Mishoe was two-over through six holes, but played the remaining dozen at five-under for a total of three-under 69. Mishoe had a one-stroke lead over Courtney entering the par-five 18th hole, on which he made a triple-bogey eight Saturday. Mishoe removed all suspense with his tournament-leading 18th birdie of the weekend for a 69, his third straight sub-par round of the tournament. His 67-70-69-206 score is the second-lowest 54-hole total in Guilford history, matching Ty Palmer’s ‘17 206 at the 2014 Gordin Classic.
Guilford freshman Louis Lambert also shot 69 Sunday and climbed into a share of sixth place among individuals with a 75-69-69-213. Teammate Josh Hill shot 77-71-73-221, good for a 37th-place tie. The Quakers’ Zach Evens saved his best for last with a 73 Sunday, which vaulted him up 15 spots to a tie for 70th place among individuals at 75-78-73-226. Senior Harrison Frye also notched his best result Sunday with a 75 that left him with a three-day 231, good for 98th place.
Methodist shot 295 in Friday’s opening round, which left the Monarchs in fifth place, a stroke ahead of Guilford. The team caught fire with a 282 Saturday, sparked by Aaron Purviance’s seven-under 65. Purviance shot an even-par 72 Sunday, which proved the Monarchs’ highest score in their tournament-low round of 278 (-10). Jared Chinn delivered a 66 Sunday, the best of Methodist’s four subpar results. Purviance and teammate Dan Shepherd joined Lambert in sixth place among individuals at 213. Each of the Monarchs’ five golfers finished 26th or higher.
