College Track & Field Results – Guilford Competes at Lynchburg’s Jack Toms Invite

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guilford College’s track and field teams had six entries in Friday’s invitational portion of the Dr. Jack Toms Alumni Track & Field Invitational hosted by Lynchburg College.

Senior Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) continued her assault on the Quakers’ record books by smashing the school’s 1500-meter mark for the second straight week. She won her section and placed seventh overall with a time of four minutes, 59.94 seconds, nearly four seconds better than her standard set March 17 at the 49er Classic. Fanney also delivered personal best with the second-fastest 800 time in Guilford history. She placed eighth among 21 contestants in the 800 with a time of 2:27.66.

Sophomore Juwan Houston (Cleveland, N.C./West Rowan) narrowly missed breaking his own 110-meter hurdles mark set last week. He placed seventh in the 26-man field with a time of 15.57 seconds, a mere .07 seconds off his school standard. He also ran a leg for Guilford’s 4×100 relay that took fifth in the eight-team race. Houston, along with Wanya Alford, Asa Bell, and anchorman Josephus Mitchell (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) hit the tape in 44.34 seconds, the seventh-best time in school history.

Sophomore Jeremiah Hedrick (Sedalia, N.C./Southern Guilford) soared to third place in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.58 meters, the seventh-longest in Guilford history.

Both men’s and women’s teams compete in Saturday’s open events.
