Elon Phoenix Sweeps Women’s Tennis Doubleheader

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s tennis earned a doubleheader sweep over Johnson C. Smith and Winston Salem State on Thursday, March 22. The Phoenix defeated the Bulls 7-0 in Greensboro at the Simkins Indoor Tennis Center and completed the sweep with a 7-0 victory over the Rams at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Erica Braschi picked up two dual-match singles wins for the Phoenix, increasing her career-total to 57 with the maroon and gold. She is now ranks third in program history since the program joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1999-00. She is now just one win away from tying Barbora Lazarova (58) for second all-time.

HIGHLIGHTS
The Phoenix only dropped three total games in singles and doubles combined en route to a 7-0 sweep of Johnson C. Smith on Thursday morning to open the doubleheader. Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 position to give Elon a 1-0 lead in the match after Kirsten Ward and Suzanne Zenoni opened doubles action with a win at the No. 3 position. Maria Paraja and Montana Moore completed the doubles slate with a 6-2 win at No. 1.

After singles victories from Zenoni and Ward, Paraja clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Aria Springfield at the No. 4 position to give the Phoenix a 4-0 lead. Braschi picked up her 56th-career dual match singles victory and Lucas closed out singles with a win at No. 1 to complete Elon’s first sweep.

Elon dropped just two games overall in a victory over Winston-Salem State in the afternoon. The Phoenix got off to a quick start against the Rams taking the doubles point after Lucas and Braschi once again clinching the point on court two. Paraja and Sofia Edo each claimed their singles wins on courts four and six, respectively, before Mia Wallace clinched the win on court five.

NOTES
– Erica Braschi ranks 3rd on Elon’s all-time dual match singles wins list in the program’s NCAA Division I record book. She is a win away from moving into a tie for 2nd and is 12 wins away from 1st all-time.
– Olivia Lucas increased her dual match singles win total to 48 for her career with two victories on Thursday. She is now in sole possession of 5th on the program’s NCAA Division I all-time list.
– Head coach Elizabeth Anderson picked up two more wins on Thursday, increasing her career win total to 195. She is now just five wins away from reaching 200 victories for her career.
– The Phoenix improves to 7-3 overall at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this season with its win over Winston-Salem State. Elon has a 21-5 record at home combined over the past two seasons.
