MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Piero Amador pitched 6 1/3 innings of shutout baseball as the Greensboro College baseball team topped the Hawks of Huntingdon College Friday, 2-0, snapping a five-game losing streak.

With the game scoreless in the fifth inning, Greensboro perfectly executed a double steal as Scotty McGuire stole second, while Tyler Price stole home.

After establishing the one-run lead, Greensboro got an insurance run in the sixth as Jimmy Short plated Blake Carroll from third base, who hit a one-out triple to left field, on a ground ball to third base.

Greensboro’s stellar pitching continued following Amador’s exit as Joseph Hoelle came into the game with one out in the seventh as was able to get the Hawks to ground into a double play to end a threat.

Following the big double play, Hoelle shut the door over the final two innings to secure the series-opening win and picked up his first save.

“Piero pitched very well today,” Head Coach Frank Maldonado said. “He had some good life on his fastball, located it well and was very effective with his secondary stuff. Joe (Hoelle) has continued to come out of the bullpen in big moments and succeeded.

“Pitching and defense won this game and that’s what it’s going to take to be a successful program. I am proud of how we competed today.”

Amador finished the day with three strikeouts, while allowing four hits, earning his second win of the season. Greensboro only tallied two hits on the day as Carroll and Jimmy Short tallied one hit each.

The Pride and the Hawks will take to the field for Game 2 of the three-game conference set at 3 p.m. (CT) Saturday. For more information on Greensboro College baseball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
