GREENVILLE, N.C. – The High Point University men’s golf team completed its first day of the Furman Intercollegiate on Friday with sophomore Brendan MacDougall leading the way.

LEADERBOARD

The Panthers are sitting in a tie for 18th after the first round of the three-day tournament hosted by the Furman University Golf Club. As a team, High Point shot a 309 with MacDougall carding a team-best 73 (+1) on the day.

“My guys are always going to know exactly where they stand and grow from it as young men should,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “Too often in our society we are expected to just celebrate trying our best, but as a competitor that isn’t always enough and after today’s performance we are staring dead last in the face. We will find out what we are made of these final two rounds as we look to move up the leaderboard the next two days.”

MacDougall was -1 through the day’s first 12 holes, but finished the final six holes three-over to complete his 73-stroke trip around the course. The Calgary, Alberta native will begin Saturday’s round tied for 31st overall.

Behind MacDougall, sophomore Alec Weary is tied for 69th with a first-round 77 while freshman Ryan McCarthy is tied for 95th after shooting a 79 in his first team round of the spring.

Rounding out the lineup, junior Davis Kiger carded an 80 and senior Emile Menard shot an 83.

The Panthers will take the course at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon for the second round of action.
