College Men’s Lacrosse Final – Guilford 10, Shenandoah 4

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Zach Berkowitz scored three goals and Bryce Craig added two in Guilford College’s 10-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over visiting Shenandoah University Saturday. The win marked Guilford’s seventh straight, the program’s longest winning streak since 1986.

Berkowitz tallied twice during a decisive 5-0 Guilford run to close the first half. Shenandoah’s Michael Brooks tied the game at 1-1 late in the second quarter, but the Quakers (8-2, 2-0 ODAC) reeled off the next five scores to take a 6-1 edge into halftime. Berkowitz connected on a man-up goal off a Charlie Kiley assist to open a 4-1 lead and closed the spurt 3:47 before intermission off a Brennan Sweeney helper.

The Hornets (3-6, 0-3 ODAC) came to life and scored three of the second half’s first four goals, but Guilford clamped down and held Shenandoah scoreless for the final 20-plus minutes. Sweeney fed Berkowitz again with 2:21 left in the third, which triggered a 3-0 spurt to end the game.

Berkowitz, Craig (2g, 1a), and Sweeney (1g, 2a) each scored three points for Guilford. Seven different Quakers scored goals. Guilford outshot the Hornets, 42-29, and successfully converted all 25 clears, a school record. Parker Styles went the distance in goal and made eight saves, plus two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Will Forrestal caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls as part of the Quakers’ stingy defense. Fellow defender Matt Bowen contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Eric Sawyer’s goal and assist paced Shenandoah’s offense. Kyle Morien, Orlando Levins, and Brooks also scored for the Hornets. Jared Barlow won 12-of-18 face-offs and picked up three ground balls. Jason Simpson made 11 saves in goal.

Coach Tom Carmean’s Quakers visit league-rival Bridgewater College next Saturday (3/31).
