GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College softball team broke their five-game losing streak after splitting a doubleheader against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan Friday.

The Pride suffered an 8-1 setback in Game 1 before bouncing back to defeat the Bishops in Game 2, 4-1.

Game 1
Freshman Jasmine Worthy was issued a walk to start off the bottom of the first inning for the Pride. After advancing two bases off of two wild pitches, senior Melissa Garcia stepped up to the plate and laced the ball into left field to bring home Worthy.

Following the Pride’s lone run, the Bishops put up eight unanswered runs to lock in the victory in Game 1.

Game 2
The Bishops put up the first run of the game in the first inning, but Greensboro eventually answered back in the fifth inning.

Alexis Newman and Worthy were issued back-to-back walks before Garcia returned to the plate. Garcia reached first base on a fielding error and Newman returned home to score the Pride’s first run to even the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cassie Collins hit a lead-off double to put herself in scoring position. Immediately after, Hayley Tickle crushed a home run into left field to give the Pride a 3-1 lead.

Following the home run, Riley Baldwin reached first on a walk and later advanced to second on a single to right field by Newman. Worthy then capitalized off of a fielder’s choice and loaded up the bases for the Pride. Baldwin then made it home safely on a wild pitch to extend Greensboro’s lead to 4-1.

The Bishops tried to battle back, but they fell by the three-run margin in the seventh inning.

Maddy Wetherholt was credited with the loss in Game 1. Wetherholt pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out one batter, while Cheyanne Cox struck out four batters over 3 2/3 innings. Cox later captured the win in Game 2 after pitching a complete game and striking out four batters.

The Pride will return to Latham Park Wednesday when they host Methodist University for a USA South doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. For more information on Greensboro College softball, continue to follow www.greensborocollegesports.com.
