HPU Women Win Four Events at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The High Point University women’s track and field team won four events Saturday (March 24) at the Wake Forest Outdoor Opener in Winston-Salem.

Senior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine had a big day, finishing first in the discus with a throw of 42.80m (140-5) and was the runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 12.49m (41-0). She also had a best mark of 45.66m (149-9.75) in the hammer throw to place third.

In the 800 meters, freshman Caroline Baudinet won in a time of 2:17.86. Fellow freshman Nathalie Elliott claimed the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.70m (12-1.75).

The 4x400m relay team finished out the meet winning in a time of 4:06.59.

Freshman Famke Heinst placed second in the mile in a time of 4:31.90.

In the 400 meters, freshman Franzi Jakobs finished fourth in 1:00.64, while in the 400m hurdles, junior Emmy Geis placed fourth in 1:10.09.

Senior CeAnna Soper was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 36.46m (119-7.5).

In the long jump, sophomore Anika Weisbrod and freshman Madison Reynolds placed third and fourth with marks of 4.93m (16-2) and 4.63m (15-2.5), respectively.

Next up, the Panthers will compete in two meets next weekend. HPU will host the Bill Webb Combined Events at Vert Stadium March 29-30, while select Panthers will compete at the Raleigh Relays March 30-31 in Raleigh.


Panther Men Capture Two Events at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The High Point University men’s track and field team captured two events at the Wake Forest Outdoor Opener Saturday (March 24) in Winston-Salem.

Senior Alejandro Juan Torres won the 1,500 meters in 3:57.42, while freshman Hocine Bouchrak placed third in a time of 3:58.34.

Freshman Siro Pina Cardona captured the 800 meters in 1:54.12, while Juan Torres was sixth in 1:58.72.

In the long jump, junior Brad Kanney placed second with a leap of 6.20m (20-4), while sophomore Pablo Romero was right behind at 6.19m (20-3.75). Freshman Gabriel Stainback was fourth with a mark of 6.05m (19-10.25).

Sophomore John Singleton III was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.81m (5-11.5).

In the 100 meters, senior James House finished fifth in 11.49.

“With the conditions today, the meet was about competing and winning, not achieving personal bests,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “Many of our student-athletes embraced that, while others let the conditions get to them. I’m very pleased with Alejandro and Siro who won their events. Again, we need to build more depth around our top guys.

“We are very excited to get our decathletes in a home decathlon this week. We are just over 40 days until the conference meet, now is the time really get after it.”
