MacDougall Leads High Point Men’s Golf in Round Two at Furman

• For the 12th time in 22 rounds this season, sophomore Brendan MacDougall shot at or below par with a -1 (71).
• Four of the five Panthers in the lineup improved from the event’s first day led by junior Davis Kiger who dropped his score by five strokes.
• As a team High Point shot seven strokes better than it did playing on Friday morning.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore Brendan MacDougall carded a -1 (71) to lead the High Point University men’s golf team to a seven-stroke improvement from its first showing in the three-day Furman Intercollegiate.

MacDougall was +2 through the first 10 holes before closing with three birdies in the final eight holes to go under par. Paced by that strong close by MacDougall, the Purple & White were under par on the second nine holes today building momentum towards Sunday’s final round.

“We played the final nine holes one-under and that’s where we expect to be each nine as a team,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “That was the first time this event where we played up to the standard we’ve set this year. I’m challenging the guys to have pride and come out and post the best round of the tournament tomorrow because I know they have the ability to achieve that.”

Four of the five Panthers in the lineup showed improvement from the first day, but HPU sits in a tie for 19th in the competitive field. There were still a handful of teams on the course on Saturday evening when lightning delayed the conclusion of round two until Sunday morning.

Through 22 rounds this season, MacDougall has shot at or below par 12 times, which is one round shy of his own program single-season record. His two-stroke improvement allowed MacDougall to move from 31st at the beginning of the day up to a tie for 21st.

Dropping his score the most of any Panther, junior Davis Kiger shot a 75 and, like MacDougall, shot below par on the second nine holes of the afternoon. The Harrisburg, N.C. product is tied for 94th along with sophomore Alec Weary who carded a 78 on the day.

Wrapping up the High Point output on Saturday, freshman Ryan McCarthy shot a 78 and senior Emile Menard finished with a 79.

The Purple & White will wrap up its time in the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
