GREENSBORO, N.C. – Grace Moore’s free-position goal with 8:43 left in regulation lifted visiting Guilford College to a 16-14 lacrosse win over Greensboro College Wednesday. Moore’s score, her second of the game, broke a 13-13 tie and was part of a 4-1 Quakers’ run to end the game.
The tightly contested affair featured eight ties and five lead changes. Neither club led by more than three goals throughout the game. It was a spirited contest with 12 cards, including 10 yellows. Guilford’s Madison Iandoli and Greensboro’s Natalie Ritchey, the teams’ leading scorers, were both separately ejected from the game in the first half after receiving two yellow cards.
Guilford’s Aubrey Helfenbein followed Moore’s go-ahead score with her second tally of the game, which opened a 15-13 Quakers’ margin. Greensboro (7-6) answered 12 seconds later as Kara Whitson picked up the ensuing draw control and drew a free-position, which she converted with 6:49 left to make it a 15-14 game.
Greensboro won possession after Whitson’s score, but Guilford goalie Sarah Sedaghat stopped Peyton Joyce’s free-position shot with 5:26 to play and then rejected Madison Blashaw’s shot nearly three minutes later to keep the Pride at bay. Abigail Horchar netted a key insurance goal with 79 seconds left and then won the ensuing draw to seal Guilford’s fourth win in five games.
Holly Kozak paced the Quakers (6-4) with four goals and Iandoli netted three before her ejection. Moore, Horchar, Helfenbein, and Carter MacLeod each scored twice for Guilford. Horchar collected a game-high eight draws and Kozak added four. Kozak and Gabriela Silva both picked up four ground balls and Sedaghat finished with 10 stops in goal.
Greensboro’s Laine Walston led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist. Whitson netted four scores and Peyton Joyce added two goals and two assists. Joyce and Ritchey (1 goal, 2 assists) both picked up seven draw controls. Stephanie Carr made 11 saves.
