College Baseball Final: #24 Shenandoah 6, Guilford 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Colin Morse pitched seven innings and earned the win–and his teammates helped with 21 hits–as 24th-ranked Shenandoah University defeated Guilford College, 16-5, on Friday at McBane Field.

SU moved to 13-6 and 4-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. Guilford dropped to 10-12-1 and 1-6 in league play.

The Quakers scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Shepherd (2-3, one run) tripled to lead off the frame. He then scored on a passed ball.

The Hornets, however, struck back with four runs in the second inning and never trailed again. SU had six doubles and a home run from Luke Nussman in the contest. Nussman, Tristan Baker and Chase Smallwood all had three hits in the game.

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, GC tallied a run. Brett Shapcott reached base for the 23rd straight game with a walk. He then stole second base and came around on a 6-4-3 double play.

Shenandoah plated six runs and chased starter Trevor Denton in the fifth frame. Denton dropped to 3-4 for the season. SU brought 10 batters to the plate and had four doubles in the inning.

GC recorded the game’s final three runs in the eighth. Dylan Tuttle doubled to right field to score Logan Shortt (who had singled) and Austin Wilson to highlight the inning.

Morse improved to 3-2 after the victory. He struck out four and walked one batter. Tanner Hobbs pitched a perfect 1 1/3 inning to close the game for GC.

The two teams close their ODAC series with a 1 p.m. game on Saturday at McBane Field.
