College Softball Doubleheader: Guilford 3-7, Covenant 5-3

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Guilford College earned a doubleheader split at non-conference opponent Covenant College on Saturday. The Quakers dropped the opener, 5-3, but prevailed in game two, 7-3.

In the first game, Covenant
(20-18) held on for a 5-3 win after leading 5-0 after three innings. GC plated three runs in the sixth. The highlight was a double to left centerfield by Makayla Carver, hich brought home Sarah Adams and Katy Holt. Carver went 3-4 to lead Quaker hitters.

Makayla Crawford doubled to
lead off the seventh inning. The Scots, however, retired the next three hitters and prevailed. Chris Gant (2-3) earned the win for CC. Courtney Lackey dropped to 6-4 on the season after suffering the defeat for GC. She allowed six hits and all five runs. Abigayle Rowell tossed a scoreless final inning for the visitors.

Guilford outhit the Scots, 8-7. Shelby Ralston went 2-3 to pace
Covenant batters.

In the nightcap, Guilford busted open a 2-2 game with five runs in the fifth inning en route to 7-3 win. Carver (3-4, 3 runs, double, HR)–who knocked a solo homer in the third–led off the fifth with a double. She came home on a single by Katie McNeil. Ella Coscia earned an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Savannah Yale scored on a wild pitch before Natalie Conrad singled in Sarah Aukamp (2-4) for GC’s final tally.

Jule Gough tossed a complete game and improved to 3-1 for the Quakers. She scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs.

For Covenant, Tyler Epes (4-7)
suffered the defeat after working four innings of relief and giving up six runs. Epes had a double for Covenant, which was outhit, 10-6.

The Quakers (13-9) host Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Lynchburg on Wednesday (4/4). The doubleheader starts at 2:30 p.m.
