High Point Men’s Golf Sits in Eighth Through Two Rounds at ECU

• Sophomore Brendan MacDougall tied his own HPU single-season record for most rounds at or under par with 13.
• Sophomore RJ Bartolomucci knocked seven strokes off his first-round score to card an E (72) on the second trip around the course.
• High Point shot an opening round 308 before improving by 10 strokes to record a 298 in the second round of the day.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore Brendan MacDougall tied his own program record for rounds at or under par in a single-season in High Point University men’s golf’s first day at the ECU Intercollegiate on Monday.

After sophomore Alec Weary paced the team through the opening round with a +2 (74), MacDougall busted out an E (72) to mark his 13th par or better round of the season. That mark equals his program-best mark from the 2016-17 campaign.

As a team, the Panthers are sitting in eighth, but dropped its score by 10 strokes from the first round to the second round (308-298). Due to the improvement on the second trip around the Brook Valley Country Club course, HPU is just six strokes from the top-five.

“There is no question in the team’s mind how much talent we have as a group,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “Our guys know they are capable of playing with any team in this field. It’s a packed leaderboard and we believe that if we play a round at the level we know we can, then we could make a move into the top-3 tomorrow.”

MacDougall opened the day with a +5 (77) and then carded a double bogey on the first hole of the second round. However, the Calgary, Alberta native bounced back recording an E (72) to finish the day tied for 19th.

Knotted with MacDougall at 19th, Weary followed his opening-round 74 with a +3 (75) on the second 18 holes. The Bluffton, S.C. product led the Panthers in par-4 scoring on the day with a 4.10 average.

Right behind that duo, RJ Bartolomucci is tied for 23rd after showing the best round-to-round improvement in the lineup. After shooting a 79 in the first round, the sophomore was +2 through 15 holes before closing with two birdies in the final three holes to match MacDougall’s 72.

Rounding out the lineup, junior Davis Kiger carded a 78 and a 79 while freshman Ryan McCarthy notched an opening round 82 follow by an 80.

The Purple & White return to the Brook Valley Country Club for the third and final round on Tuesday morning.
