College Men’s Lacrosse Final – #16 Roanoke 9, Guilford 5

SALEM, Va. – Garritt Schwarz scored two goals and three assists in Roanoke College’s 9-5 lacrosse win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday. The Maroons (7-3, 4-1 ODAC) are ranked 16th in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Coaches’ Poll.

Jason Sarro scored twice from Schwarz to cap Roanoke’s 4-0 game-opening run. Guilford’s Michael Aust and Brennan Sweeney tallied to close the first-quarter scoring with the Quakers trailing, 4-2. Schwarz scored his first goal with 47 seconds left in the half and 29 seconds later set up a Tommy McAleer tally that sent the hosts into the half up, 6-2.

The teams traded third-quarter goals before McAleer and Schwarz netted consecutive fourth-quarter scores that opened a 9-3 margin. Guilford’s Charlie Kiley and Aswan Bland scored in the last four minutes to provide the final margin.

Roanoke outshot Guilford, 48-26, but Quakers’ goalie Parker Styles kept his team in the game with a season-best 17 saves. The Quakers committed a season-high 35 turnovers, 26 of which were forced by Maroons. Joey Russell caused five miscues and Tim Aldinger four. Goalie Ian Davies made nine saves and Robby Moore picked up eight ground balls.

Kiley and Sweeney both scored a goal and an assist to paced the Quakers’ offense. Bland, Derek Spaulding, and Michael Aust added Guilford’s other goals. Defenseman Will Forrestal had six ground balls, four caused turnovers, and an assist. Michael Hickner won 12-of-17 face-offs and collected seven ground balls.
