College Softball Finals – Lynchburg 4-5, Guilford 1-2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Visiting Lynchburg College used solid pitching and the long ball to sweep an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader from Guilford College Wednesday. The Hornets (19-9, 5-5 ODAC) took the opener, 4-1, and rallied for a 5-2 win in the nightcap.

Mackenzie Chitwood had two hits, including a seventh-inning home run, to support sophomore pitcher Alex Cisar’s complete-game five-hitter in the opener. Lynchburg took a 2-0 lead with a pair of third-inning runs opened a 3-1 edge in the fourth on a Skylar Dickens RBI bunt single. Brittany Coffey and Jordyne Vance also had two hits apiece.

Guilford (13-11, 2-5 ODAC) hit doubles in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, but failed to plate a run after Makayla Carver’s infield single scored Katy Holt in the third. Cisar walked just one and improved to 6-3 with the victory. Julie Gough (3-2) took the loss.

The Quakers grabbed a quick lead in the nightcap as Carver homered on Lynchburg starter Kayley Cox’s first pitch. An unearned run in the third game Guilford a 2-0 edge, but Lynchburg eventually caught up with Courtney Lackey (6-4) in the later innings.

Vance’s RBI single in the fifth got the Hornets on the board and Mabry tied the game an inning later with a solo home run to left. Morgan Mitchell broke the tie with a two-run shot to center in the top of the seventh. Mabry added an RBI single to close the scoring.

Conner English (7-2) relieved Cox in the third inning and fanned five in 4.2 innings for her team-leading seventh win. She scattered two hits and walked one.

Carver had three of Guilford’s four hits.

Coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers visit seventh-ranked Randolph-Macon College Saturday (4/7) in an ODAC doubleheader before visiting top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Sunday (4/8).
