Elon Track and Field Heads to High Point’s VertKlasse Meeting

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team makes its next trip within the Triad as the Phoenix heads to High Point for the 10th annual VertKlasse Meeting. The meet is set for Friday, April 6, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Vert Stadium.

The meet, originally scheduled for two days from Friday to Saturday, was reduced to a single day due to inclement weather in the forecast.

Inside the Meet: VertKlasse Meeting
The 10th annual VertKlasse Meeting is a European-style meet that features a small amount of high-level competitors, creating a fast-moving, exciting competition. About 19 teams are scheduled to have at least one athlete in competition this weekend including local schools like Campbell, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, UNCG, ACC foe Virginia tech and host High Point.

Last Time Out
Elon had athletes set two new school-records along with three others establishing personal-bests at the prestigious Raleigh Relays this past weekend. Coralea Geraniotis kicked off her 2018 outdoor season by setting a new school-record in the 5,000-meters as the Orleans, Mass., native clocked a time of 16:29.68 in the race – a new 18-second personal-record. She broke Allyson Oram’s ’14 previous school-record and finished 23rd overall in the very competitive field.

Bryanna Hames also set a new personal-record as the Charlotte, N.C., native broke her own outdoor shot put program-record with a toss of 51′ 1.5″ (15.58m) and finished as the runner-up in the event. Fellow senior Bre’anna Warren also finished in the top-10 of the event with her toss of 47′ 7.25″ (14.51m), good for eighth overall. Hames followed with a season-best throw in the discus with her mark of 160′ 10″ (49.03m) and finished fifth overall. Warren was 10th overall in the discus with her mark of 152′ 1″ (46.37m).

In the 1,500-meters, Melissa Anastasakis set a new personal-record with her time of 4:29.80 in the race, moving to the fourth-best time in school history. The sophomore finished seventh overall while junior Chelsea Smith also established a new five-second personal-record with a time 4:35.79.

Katie Arbogast ran a new personal-best in the 400-meters for the Phoenix with her time of 56.49. Lauren Brzozowski ran a new season-best time of 57.54 in the race while Natacha Savioz clocked a 57.70.

Elon Prelims
• Both Geraniotis and Hames were tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association’s Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office on Tuesday, April 3. It’s the third overall weekly award this season for the Phoenix. The pair joined Warren, who received CAA honors last week.
• Elon currently has five marks that sit in the top-48 on the NCAA East Outdoor qualifying list. Hames has the highest ranking with her 13th-place ranking in the shot put while she also sits 35th overall in the discus. Warren is 28th overall in the discus in the East Region while the Greensboro, N.C., native is 42nd in the shot put. Geraniotis is 23rd in the East in the 5,000-meters.
• Geraniotis (5,000-meters) and Warren (discus) currently hold the top spots on the CAA’s Outdoor performance list in their respective events. The Phoenix also has 19 athletes that sit in the top-five of events on the league’s outdoor performance list and two relays teams.
• The Phoenix currently sit 14th overall as a team in the NCAA Southeast Region, the highest ranked team from the CAA in the region. Elon is ahead of fellow league foes William & Mary (18), James Madison (30), UNCW (33) and College of Charleston (39). Defending league champion Towson has the highest regional ranking of any CAA team with its fourth-place standing in the Mid-Atlantic.
• At the Raleigh Relays, the Phoenix’s 4×400-meter relay team of Arbogast, Meagan Henderson, Gabriela Varisco de Oliveira and Brzozowski ran a season-best time of 3:48.86 That mark is currently second-fastest performance in the CAA this season.

Elon returns home to host its annual meet, the Phoenix Invitational, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex, next Saturday, April 14.
