College Baseball Final – Guilford 8, #9/13 Roanoke 5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Zach Dinkins threw six solid innings and Mitchell Stumpo fanned five in a two-inning save as Guilford College upset nationally-ranked Roanoke College Wednesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.

The Maroons (21-7, 11-3 ODAC) entered the game ranked ninth in this week’s D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll and 13th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Poll.

Dinkins, Brody Holloman, and Stumpo combined to scatter eight hits and record nine strikeouts in Guilford’s fourth straight win. After Roanoke’s Will Salva started the scoring with a solo homer in the first, Dinkins yielded two unearned runs in the third inning and left the game after six innings with a 6-3 lead. Two walks, a hit batsman, a passed ball and a wild pitch resulted in two Roanoke runs off of Holloman in the seventh, but the Quakers answered with two runs of their own on RBIs by Stumpo and Logan Shortt. Stumpo took over in the eighth and struck out five in two innings.

Guilford’s Brett Shapcott continued his hot hitting with a pair of hits, which extended his on-base streak to 28 games. He also stole two bases, raising his league-leading total to 14 thefts. Rocco Wilcox also had two hits and scored twice. Josh Shepherd walked twice and score two times, which moved him into fifth place among Guilford’s career runs leaders with 131.

Jack Howard had two of Roanoke’s eight hits and walked twice. The Maroons stranded nine runners in their third loss in four games. Steven Loney (1-1), the first of five Roanoke pitchers, was touched for five hits and four runs (two earned) in two innings.

The same two teams play the second of their two-game season series Thursday (4/12) at Ferrum (Va.) College at 7:00 p.m.
