College Men’s Tennis Final – Methodist 6, Guilford 3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trent Harner and Wynn Johnson both won twice in Methodist University’s 6-3 nonconference tennis win over host Guilford College Wednesday afternoon.

The Monarchs improved to 14-7 on the year and stopped the Quakers’ (6-3) winning streak at four. Guilford played without a pair of top-five regulars due to injury.

Harner teamed with Coleman Baker for a convincing 8-0 win over Guilford’s Elijah Gregory and Kai Glass at second doubles. Johnson and Kayhahn Alikhani downed the Quakers’ Jarad Gandy and Kane Mills, 8-2 at third doubles, which gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Harner pulled out a 6-2, 7-5 win at third singles over the Quakers’ Graham Pearson (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley). Johnson was a 6-0, 6-1 victor over Glass at number-four singles. Hayden Wilfong and Jack Holloway notched straight-set triumphs at fifth and sixth singles, respectively for Methodist.

Guilford’s Tate Godwin won twice for the Quakers. He teamed with Pearson for an 8-6 first-doubles win over the Monarchs’ Jacob Oehser and Reid Rose. Godwin took out Baker in the first singles contest, 6-0, 6-2. Guilford’s Gregory ground out a 6-1, 7-6 (10-3) win over Rose at second singles.
