College Baseball Final – #9/13 Roanoke 15, Guilford 5

FERRUM, Va. – Sean Guida went 4-for-5 with a homer and six runs batted in (RBI) in Roanoke College’s 15-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win over Guilford College Thursday night.

The Maroons (22-7, 12-3 ODAC) are ranked ninth in this week’s D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll and 13th in the American Collegiate Baseball Association/Collegiate Baseball Division III Poll. Roanoke, which lost at Guilford Wednesday, salvaged a share of the two-game season series and snapped the Quakers’ (14-14-1, 5-8 ODAC) four-game winning streak.

After the Quakers’ jumped ahead on Logan Shortt’s first-inning RBI single, Roanoke bounced back with a four-run second inning. Guida’s three-run homer, his team-leading sixth blast of the season, sparked the four-run frame.

Guilford battled back to tie the score at 5-5 with two fifth-inning runs on Mitchell Stumpo and Trevor Denton RBIs. Roanoke answered in the bottom of the fifth as Guida delivered a two-out RBI single that ultimately put the Maroons ahead. Cody Shell’s three-run homer and Guida’s two-run double were part of Roanoke’s nine-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach.

Will Salva had three hits and scored twice for Roanoke, which had 14 hits. Shell had two hits, three RBI and walked three times. Robbie Edwards also had two hits and scored twice. Ethan Delahunty (2-1) threw the fifth inning and ended up as the winning pitcher. Kevin Ledford tossed three scoreless frames to squelch any hope of a Guilford rally.

Denton went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead Guilford’s offense. Josh Shepherd doubled twice and scored two runs. Dylan Tuttle added two hits and Brett Shapcott had a fifth-inning single that extended his on-base streak to 29 games. Ty Walser (0-1) took the loss with 2.2 innings of relief in which he yielded five hits and two runs.

Coach Nick Black’s ’02 Quakers visit ODAC rival Washington and Lee University Saturday (4/14) for a league doubleheader.
