Elon Track and Field Hosts Phoenix Invitational on Saturday

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team is set to host its annual home meet, the Phoenix Invitational, this Saturday, April 14, at the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex. Events are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Admission is free for the meet as fans are encouraged to take in the track meet as part of a full schedule of events on campus this weekend with Elon Baseball and Elon Women’s Lacrosse home for competition.

Inside the Meet: Phoenix Invitational
This is the fourth straight season that the Elon will host its annual meet, the Phoenix Invitational, and the fifth time overall that the program has hosted a meet on its home track since 2015. The meet has 15 programs with at least one athlete scheduled to compete at the meet on Saturday including fellow Triad rival High Point.

Senior Recognition
Around midday on Saturday at the meet, the Phoenix will recognize its six-member senior class of Brigid Brennan, Emily Dixon, Bryanna Hames, Lydia Laws, Bre’anna Warren and Corey Weiss from both the Elon cross country and track and field programs. The group has been a part of two Colonial Athletic Association outdoor track and field championship teams as well as numerous individual conference titles and all-league honors during their careers.

Last Time Out
The Phoenix earned four event victories at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point last Friday, April 6. Warren had two of those wins with victories in the discus and the shot put while Chelsea Smith led an Elon podium sweep in the 800-meters. The Phoenix’s 4×400-meter relay team earned the last event title of the meet for the maroon and gold.

Warren set a new personal-record in the discus throw as the Greensboro, N.C., native had a toss of 167′ 4″ (51.01m) to take medalist accolades. Teammate Bryanna Hames was the runner-up with her mark of 156′ 4″ (46.66m). Warren added her second event title with a 47′ 5″ (14.45m) in the shot put.

Smith clocked a 2:13.93 in the 800-meters, just shy of her personal-best. She would take medalist honors in the race ahead of teammate Natacha Savioz, who ran a 2:14.11 as the runner-up. Gabriela Varisco De Oliveira closed out the top-three of the event with her time of 2:15.72. Elon’s 4×400-meter relay quartet of Katie Arbogast, Meagan Henderson, Savioz and Lauren Brzozowski won the race with its time of 3:49.97.

The Phoenix also had a few of its individuals set new personal-records at the meet. Barthelmes threw the third-best mark in school history in the hammer throw as the Dartmouth, Mass., native set a new personal-record with a 171′ 10″ (52.39m) and was fourth overall. Arbogast clocked a time of 55.79 in the 400-meters – a new personal-record for the Media, Pa., native. She was the runner-up in the race while Brzozowski was third overall with her time of 56.95, a new season-best.

Elon Prelims
• Warren earned her second CAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor this season on Tuesday, April 10, for her performance at the VertKlasse Meeting. It was the third straight week that Elon has received league weekly accolades.
• The Phoenix currently have 27 athletes and two relay teams sitting among the top-eight on the CAA outdoor performance list. Two athletes, Warren (discus) and Coralea Geraniotis (5,000-meters), hold the top spot in their respective events in the league.
• So far this season, the Phoenix has seen nine athletes earn spots on the program’s top-five performance list including two setting new school records.
• Geraniotis set a new school-record in the 5,000-meters at the Raleigh Relays on March 30 as the Orleans, Mass., native ran a time of 16:29.68 at the meet.
• Hames also set a new school-record at the Raleigh Relays as she broke her own mark in the shot put. The Charlotte, N.C., native threw a mark of 51′ 1.5″ (15.58m) at the meet.
• The Phoenix currently have three athletes that are in the top-48 in their respective events on the NCAA East Qualifying list. Hames is the highest-ranking Elon athlete in 17th in the shot put while she sits 40th in the discus. Warren is 22nd overall in the discus while just outside the top-48 in the shot put at 49th. Geraniotis is 23rd in the 5,000-meters.
• Elon remains the highest-ranking team from the CAA in the Southeast Region with the Phoenix at No. 15. William & Mary (18), James Madison (31), UNCW (34) and College of Charleston (37) rank below the Phoenix in the Southeast Region. Towson is the highest-ranked regional team from the CAA overall at fifth in the Mid-Atlantic.

The Phoenix will split for meets at the Virginia Challenge and the Duke Invitational next Friday, April 20.
