FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The High Point University men’s golf team opened the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday in a loaded field at the Vanderbilt Legends Course in Franklin, Tenn.
Sophomore Alec Weary got hot in the second round of the day carding two eagles to give the squad 11 on the year – the most in a single-season in HPU history. As a team, the Panthers are in 13th, but improved by six strokes on the second trip around the course.
“Once again, we found ourselves leading through the first six holes today, which we have done many times this season, but weren’t able to finish it off,” head coach Brady Gregor said. “We have to get back to having the focus to finish off those rounds like we know we can. Alec had a great bounce-back round this afternoon aided by two eagles, which fired the guys up because we broke the school record and that was one of their goals today. Weather will play a big part on if we play 18 or 36 holes before the end of the tournament. Obviously, we are hoping for 36 so we can make a run and play how we know we can.”
Weary opened the day with an 81, but responded in the second round posting his two eagles and shooting HPU’s best round of the day (73). Overall, he’s tied for 64th in a field that features nine of the top-100 teams in the country.
Tied with Weary overall, sophomore Brendan MacDougall carded a 76 and a 78 to enter Saturday tied for 64th. Tying MacDougall for the second-best round by a Panther, junior Davis Kiger recovered from an opening-round 82 to shoot a 76 on the second 18.
Rounding out the lineup, sophomore RJ Bartolomucci shot a 79 and an 83 while senior Emile Menard carded rounds of 80 and 84.
