College Softball: Guilford and Eastern Mennonite Split ODAC DH

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) softball doubleheader with Eastern Mennonite University on Monday. The Quakers won game one, 7-4, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2.

GC moved to 16-16 and 5-9 in ODAC play. The Royals are now 18-15 and 6-10.

In the opener, Guilford trailed 4-3 after 4 1/2 innings. The Quakers, however, plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to prevail. Makayla Crawford smashed a grand slam home run for the
winning runs. Crawford went 3-4 with a double and now has a team-leading 10 home runs. Makayla Carver went 3-3 and Anna Wolfe was 2-3 with a double for GC.

Julie Gough (5-3) earned the win for the home team. Abigayle Rowell tossed the final two frames and picked up the save for the Quakers.

Kelsi Martin (8-5) took the defeat for EMU. Sydney Reath and Makayla Morris both contributed two hits for the visitors.

In the nightcap, the Royals broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the top of the seventh to capture the win and earn the split. Tiffani Shaheen led off the inning with a single. She was bunted to second base and scampered to third on a wild pitch. Reath then singled to left field for the game-winning RBI.

Courtney Lackey (7-7) was pinned with the loss for Guilford. Reath worked a complete game and moved to 5-6 after getting the victory.

Eastern Mennonite recorded 10 hits to GC’s five in game two. Sheehan and Kelsi Martin each hit 3-4 for the Royals. Lackey and Katy Holt both had two hits for the home club.

The Quakers play at Pfeiffer University on Wednesday (4/18). The non-conference doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
