Elon Baseball Rolls Over Campbell

ELON, N.C. – Mason Daniels struck out a season-high six hitters and the Elon University baseball team pounded out 10 hits on its way to an 11-1 non-conference victory over the visiting Campbell Camels at Latham Park on Tuesday, April 17.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Daniels (1-1) earned his first win of the year after allowing one run on two hits over 5.0 innings. A trio of Elon (21-16) relievers combined to strike out five hitters and allow just one hit over the final 4.0 shutout innings.

At the plate, Elon saw Matt Oldham go 2-for-5 with a double, one run scored and a career-best three RBI, while Zach Evers had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in one.

For Campbell (20-17), the loss went to starter Matthew Barefoot who was charged with four unearned runs on two hits in an inning of work.

The Camels managed just three hits on the night, including just one after the third inning. One of the three was a homer off the bat of Zach Minnick.

How It Happened: After Daniels retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Elon offense went to work in its first trip to the plate. Evers started things off with a walk and headed to second when Garrett Stonehouse was hit by a pitch. With one out, a ground ball to third looked like it may get the Camels out of the inning, but the ball was not fielded cleanly and the Phoenix loaded the bases. Joe Satterfield delivered the first run of the game as he hit the first of his two sacrifice flies on the night, this one plating Evers. Oldham drove home the second run with a single up the middle before Josh Broughton’s two-RBI triple to the gap in right made it a 4-0 game.

Campbell got one back in the top of the second when Minnick led off the inning with a homer to left only to see the Phoenix respond with a run of its own in the bottom half. With runners on the corners, Evers got hung up between first and second on a steal attempt allowing Tyler Stanley to score from third.

Elon added single markers in the sixth and seventh thanks to an Evers single and a Camel error to extend its lead to 7-1. The final blow came in the eighth as the Phoenix sent eight hitters to the plate and scored four runs. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Ryne Ogren’s sacrifice fly to left brought home Stanley. After a walk reloaded the bases, Satterfield connected on his second sac fly of the game. Oldham then drove home the final two with a double to deep center.

Notes: Elon batters did not record a strikeout in the game against a team that had recorded 354 strikeouts over its first 36 games… Ogren’s streak of reaching base safely came to a close at 20 games… Phoenix skipper Mike Kennedy is now one win away from 700 in his career.

On Deck: Kennedy will go for win 700 on Wednesday, April 18 as the Phoenix hosts North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m.
