Case Breaks 800m School Record at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. — The High Point University women’s track and field team finished action at the Duke Invitational Saturday (April 21), highlighted by a school record in the 800 meters by junior Keaton Case.
Case set the 800 meters school record in a time of 2:07.82 to place seventh. Case previously set the school record at the Raleigh Relays in 2:08.39. Also in the 800 meters, freshman Caroline Baudinet placed 23rd in 2:12.67.
Senior CeAnna Soper placed sixth in the heptathlon at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., with a score of 4,594 points. The score included a personal-best marks in the javelin (43.19m – 141-8) and 800 meters (2:27.97).
In the shot put, senior Makenzi Holmes-DiGiovine finished 17th with a mark of 12.46m (40-10.5).
Sophomore Ariel Wilbekin placed 20th in the triple jump with a leap of 11.07m (36-4).
In the pole vault, freshman Nathalie Elliott finished ninth after clearing a height of 3.65m (11-11.75).
“The highlight was Keaton in the 800 with a probably NCAA First Round qualifying time and the third school record for our women in less than 24 hours,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “Again, can’t say enough about the girls and also the job that Coach (Remy) Tamer is doing with them. Makenzi was solid in the shot and Caroline had a great 800 of her own. CeAnna had an excellent javelin and was just off her personal best in the heptathlon as a whole.
“We need to get everyone firing on the same level in two weeks at the conference championships.”
Next up, the Panthers are scheduled to split up again for three meets the weekend of April 27-28, the ETSU TriStar Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville, Va., and the Mountaineer Open in Boone.
HPU Men Finish Action at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. — The High Point University men’s track and field team concluded action at the Duke Invitational Saturday (April 21).
In the pole vault invitational, sophomore Carter Clasper cleared 4.90m (16-0.75) to place 10th, while sophomore Jordan McClung was 13th with a clearance of 4.75m (15-7).
Senior James House finished 16th in the 200 meters in 21.99
Freshman Siro Pina Cardona placed 19th in the 800 meters in a personal-best time of 1:52.48.
Junior Britton Mann finished 20th in the discus with a mark of 42.26m (138-8).
At the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., sophomore Pablo Romero finished fourth in the decathlon with a total score of 6,638 points. He finished the day with a PR in the 1,500 meters of 4:28.89.
“Siro had a personal best in the 800 and is coming around at the perfect time,” HPU head coach Mike Esposito said. “Carter continues to knock on the 5-meter barrier in the pole vault, while Pablo had an excellent 1,500 in his decathlon at UVA. It was also exciting to see Brendan McCabe break two minutes for the first time and Anthony Sasso competed very well in the 800.
“We need a total team effort at the conference meet in a couple weeks. Now it’s time to get everyone completely healthy, sharpen up and get after it at the conference championships.”
