ELON, N.C. – Hayden Platt’s three-run double in the last of the sixth propelled the Elon University baseball team to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Hartford Hawks in game two of a three-game series at Latham Park on Saturday, April 21.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Elon (24-16) has now won seven consecutive games, its longest streak since winning nine straight in 2009.

Platt ended the day 1-for-3 with three RBI to pace Elon’s offense. Zach Evers went 2-for-4 with a run and one RBI, while Ryne Ogren went 2-for-3 and scored once for the Phoenix.

George Kirby (7-1) allowed one run on six hits over 7.0 innings to pick up the win. He struck out six. He is the first Elon pitcher to win seven games in a season since Lucas Bakker did so in 2014. Robbie Welhaf tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout to earn his fifth save of the year.

For Hartford (14-22), Nick Campana and Zachary Ardito both posted 2-for-4 days at the plate.

Starter Nicholas Dombkowski (3-5) took the loss as he was charged with three runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out 10 hitters.

How It Happened: Hartford was the first to score, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ardito singled home TJ Ward who led off the inning with a walk.

Elon finally pushed through in the last of the sixth. Evers started things off with a single to left and moved to second on Ogren’s one-out single. A two-out walk to Garrett Stonehouse loaded the bases for Platt who lined a 1-1 pitch to center. The Hartford defender tried to make a diving grab, but missed, and all three runners scored to put the Phoenix in front by a 3-1 margin.

The maroon and gold tacked on one more in the seventh when Evers’ double down the line in left drove home Ty Adcock.

Notes: Evers’ now has six straight multi-hit games… Elon pitchers recorded seven strikeouts on the day, snapping a streak of six consecutive games with at least 10 K’s.

On Deck: Elon and Hartford will conclude the series on Sunday, April 22. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. at Latham Park.
