College Baseball Final: Guilford 6, Emory & Henry 5

EMORY, Va. — Zach Dinkins improved his pitching record to 5-0 and Guilford College held off a ninth-inning rally as the Quakers won at Emory & Henry, 6-5, on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory was the sixth in the past seven games for GC, which improved to 20-16-1 and 8-10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference games. The Wasps fell to 11-19 and 4-14 in league play.

Dinkins tossed 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) in the win. He struck out five Wasps and allowed six hits and one walk. E&H trailed 6-2 heading to the final frame. Trevor Denton entered in the ninth with two runners on base but earned his first save of the season. Denton struck out Eli Straw with two runners on base to end the game.

Guilford plated three runs in sixth and eighth innings for its offense. Leading 3-1 in the eighth, Rocco Wilcox singled in Denton–who reached on an error–for the first run. Brett Shapcott later singled with two outs and an error allowed Wilcox and Sam Gerald to reach home for the second and third unearned runs for GC in the inning.

Wilcox went 3-4 win a run and two RBI to lead the Quaker offense. Gerald was 2-3 and Denton had a double, Guilford’s lone extra-base hit.

Noah Griffin (2-4) started and took the loss for Emory & Henry. He allowed all six runs, but just two were earned. The Wasps collected 11 hits to GC’s 10. Holden Watkins went 3-5 with two RBI to pace the home club.

The Quakers host Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday on the final dayof ODAC regular season play. The Doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. It’s also Guilford’s Senior Day.
