Students From Crest And Forbush Tapped As Winners Of Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarship Winners For 2018

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is pleased to announce the 2018 recipients of the Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarship, an award honoring the late and former executive director of the NCHSAA. Anna Kathryn Kilby from Forbush High School and Jameson Tyler “J.T.” Stroupe from Crest High School were named the winners of the $1,500 scholarship.

ABOUT THE CHARLIE ADAMS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
The Charlie Adams Endowed Scholarship was created in honor of Charlie Adams, former executive director of the NCHSAA, for his more than 40 years of dedication to helping the boys and girls of North Carolina by offering opportunities to participate in athletics. Adams led the Association through huge transitions and great expansions during his tenure as Executive Director from 1984 until he retired in 2010. He was the fifth Executive Director in the history of the Association. Prior to becoming executive director, Adams served as assistant executive director and supervisor of officials for the Association for some 17 years. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 81.

The female award is given in honor of his daughter, Michelle Adams Szwajkun, who participated at Chapel Hill High School on the cross-country team, including a spot on the 1984 state championship team. The male award is given in memory of Charlie Adams’ son, C. Scott Adams, who wrestled at Chapel Hill High and was the first Tiger to compete in the state wrestling championships, finishing fourth overall.

ANNA KATHRYN KILBY – FORBUSH HIGH SCHOOL
Anna Kathryn Kilby is a senior at Forbush that performed well in cross country as well as both indoor and outdoor track. Kilby distinguished herself throughout her high school career in cross country, breaking the 5K record at her home cross country course in her freshman season before going on to an 11th place finish at the NCHSAA 2A State Championships. She won the 2A Cross Country State Championship in her junior year and has been named the team MVP for all four of her years at Forbush. In Track, Kilby has qualified for the State Meet in each of her four seasons, winning a State championship in the 3200 meters at the State 1A/2A Indoor Track Championships during her junior and senior years.

Off the track, Kilby is a member of the Beta Club, DECA, Junior Civitan Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is an active member and Sunday School Teacher at Pilot View Friends Church where she has volunteered with Vacation Bible School as well. She has also served as a volunteer coach with Twins City Youth Soccer Association Summer Camps and Clinics in addition to volunteering with Special Olympics. Kilby carries a 4.00 unweighted GPA and plans to attend Davidson College in the fall to study Political Science.

JAMESON TYLER “J.T.” STROUPE – CREST HIGH SCHOOL
J.T. Stroupe is a senior at Crest High School that has participated in wrestling and cross country during his high school career. Stroupe was given the team’s “Rabbit Award” during his sophomore cross country season. He also served as the wrestling team captain for his senior year after being named the Crest High Rookie Wrestler of the Year during his junior season. He qualified for regionals in each of the last two years of his wrestling career.

Stroupe has stayed active with the Boiling Springs Baptist Church Youth Group, serving as Student Body President his senior year as well as serving with National Honor Society as the school’s chapter Vice President and President during his two years with that group. He enjoys buying and reselling items he finds in flea markets, auctions and yard sales. Stroupe carries a 3.98 unweighted GPA and plans to attend either UNC-Chapel Hill or Clemson to study Business Education when he graduates.
