No. 17 HPU WLAX Comes From Behind to Defeat Hofstra, 13-9

• The Panthers held a 9-3 advantage in the second half to storm back for their 14th consecutive win
• High Point did not hold a lead until midway through the second half
• Freshman Abby Hormes recorded her 11th hat trick of the season

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — The No. 17/19 High Point University women’s lacrosse team outscored Hofstra, 9-3, in the second half to come from behind and earn a 13-9 road win in its regular season finale Thursday night (April 26) at Shuart Stadium.

Down 8-6 with 19:51 remaining in the game, the Panthers (15-2) came back and scored six in a row to take a 12-8 lead. Senior Erica Perrotta’s tally with 14:18 left gave the Panthers their first lead of the contest. It was High Point’s 14th consecutive win.

The Pride (8-9) held a 9-2 advantage in draw controls in the first period, while making five saves to HPU’s three, but in the second half, the Panthers led in draw controls, 8-5, saves, 5-4, and shots, 16-11.

“This was a nice team win to end the regular season,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “I’m really proud of the way this team committed to our game plan and dug deep in the second half. Sam Herman has been our anchor in the draw circle and Olivia Nostrant really led the way on our defensive end, I’m proud of their focus and determination.

“We are excited to get back to campus and welcome the Big South Championships to High Point University next weekend.”

Freshman Abby Hormes recorded her 11th hat trick on the season and has 51 overall goals, which ranks fourth on HPU’s single-season list. Perrotta and junior Maggie Williams each had two goals and an assist.

Junior Samantha Herman tallied a pair of goals, while her eight draw controls moved her to 71 on the campaign, a single-season HPU record. The Panthers also had goals from senior Brooke Stevens, sophomore Ashley Britton and freshman Nicole Pugh, while freshman Kaely Kyle added a goal and an assist.

Sophomore Jill Rall made eight key saves, including five in the second half, to earn the win in net.

In the first half, the Pride scored the first three goals 4:33 into the game before Herman tallied the next two goals and Abby Hormes tied the game with 15:29 left in the period. Hofstra scored three of the next four, including a Carlee Ancona goal with 27 seconds left, to take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.

Next up, the Panthers will host the Big South Tournament semifinals on Friday, May 4. HPU will play the winner of Radford and Campbell at 4 p.m. at Vert Stadium. The final is scheduled for Sunday, May 6 at noon on ESPN3.
