Elon Baseball Evens Up Series at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Cam Devanney was 3-for-3 and George Kirby allowed one run over 6.2 innings as the Elon University baseball team evened up its series with the UNCW Seahawks with a 6-2 victory at Brooks Field on Saturday afternoon.

Box Score | Play-by-Play

Elon (26-17, 8-6 CAA) pounded out 12 hits on the day. Along with Devanney’s three hits, which included a triple, Ryne Ogren recorded two hits and Liam O’Regan posted a two-hit day. O’Regan scored twice, homered and drove in two in the victory.

Kirby (8-1) struck out six hitters and scattered five hits in his performance. Robbie Welhaf recorded the final seven outs and struck out three to finish it off.

For UNCW (26-16, 8-6), Zack Canada was 2-for-5 with a double and run scored, while both Greg Jones and David Sheaffer were 2-for-4.

The loss went to Landen Roupp (0-3) who was removed after he allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits in 3.1 innings.

How It Happened: Elon took advantage of a Seahawk error in the first inning to score a pair of unearned runs. With runners on second and third after an Ogren double, Hayden Platt lifted a sacrifice fly to center. James Venuto then singled home Ogren to make it a 2-0 contest.

UNCW loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a double, single and hit batter. Mason Berne grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score a run before Kirby struck out Jones to end the inning.

It remained a 2-1 game until the fourth when Tyler Stanley’s double drove home Devanney. In the fifth, Elon tacked on two more. The first scored on an O’Regan single before Matt Oldham’s single to right plated O’Regan to extend the advantage to 5-1.

The Seahawks cut the deficit to 5-2 in the eighth when Kep Brown singled home Berne. UNCW would leave a pair aboard that inning when a strikeout ended the frame.

Elon got that run back in the ninth as O’Regan drove an 0-1 pitch over the wall in center. It was his fourth homer of the season.

Notes: Kirby’s eight victories are the most by an Elon pitcher since Dylan Clark won nine games in 2012… Elon won its seventh road game, the most for the program since winning nine in 2015.

On Deck: Elon and UNCW will play the rubber match on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
