High Point University Holds 2018 Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Seniors Hunter Lee and Erica Perrotta were named High Point University’s Athletes of the Year at the Panthers’ student-athlete awards ceremony Sunday afternoon (April 29) at the Hayworth Fine Arts Center.

Lee is leading the HPU baseball team in hitting (.361), hits (56), doubles (11), RBI (34) and on-base percentage (.466) this season. He had a career-high 28-game hitting streak earlier in the season and has a hit in 35 of 39 games.

Perrotta is the first Big South women’s lacrosse player to be named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year. Perrotta leads the team with a single-season school record 39 caused turnovers and is second on the squad with 44 goals, 24 assists, 68 points and 35 ground balls.

The HPU women’s soccer team earned the Competition Cup based on academic performance, student-athlete giving, outreach, leadership, supporting fellow athletes and athletic performance.

Senior Becca Rolfe (women’s soccer) took home the Tobias Scholar-Athlete Award, while sophomore Jahaad Proctor (men’s basketball) earned the E. Vance Davis Scholar-Athlete Award.

Senior Connor Robinson was named the Breakout Athlete of the Year, while Famke Heinst (women’s track and field/cross country) was honored as the Freshman of the Year. The women’s lacrosse team’s win over nationally-ranked Duke was voted High Point’s Game of the Year.

Senior Brooke Stevens (women’s lacrosse) and junior Brad Kanney (men’s track and field) were voted the department’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year, respectively, by High Point’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

For excellence in the area of strength and conditioning, the Iron Panther of the Year Awards went to Perrotta and junior Andrew Gottfried (baseball). The Iron Cubs of the Year were freshmen Travis Holt (baseball) and Nathalie Elliott (women’s track and field).

Athletic Director Dan Hauser gave highlights of High Point University’s 2017-18 school year. All of HPU’s seniors earned rings provided by the Panther Club.
