Fisher Named To Puerto Rican National Team For World Cup Qualifier

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College women’s soccer player Mercedes Fisher is about to get the opportunity of a lifetime.
Fisher, a sophomore, has been selected to the Puerto Rican national team and will play in the Concacaf Caribbean Women’s World Cup Qualifier in the Dominican Republic, beginning May 5 when the team opens pool play against Anguilla.
“To play at a national level is a dream of every soccer player,” Fisher said. “We were told that less than 1 percent of soccer players will play in college and less than 1 percent of those would go on to play professionally.
“Somewhere in the back of my mind, I never thought that day would come, yet here I am. I know that I still have so much to learn. One thing I promise to do is represent my country, my school and my family well every time I step out on that field. I will give it everything I have and be the very best I can be.”
Fisher will join her 18 other teammates, from all NCAA and professional levels, May 2 for travel before starting training May 3.
“Whatever the outcome, I thank God that I even have this opportunity and for putting the friends, family, teammates and coaches in my life to get me this far.” Fisher added. “I especially would like to thank Coach (Gus) Mota and Coach (Lorenzo) Rodriguez for helping me grow over the first two years of my collegiate career and helping me get this opportunity.”
In addition to their match-up against Anguilla, Fisher and her teammates will also square off against the Dominican Republic (May 7), Cuba (May 9) and Aruba (May 11).
“Greensboro College is very fortunate to have a student-athlete like Mercedes represent our school and the women’s soccer program internationally,” Head Coach Gus Mota said. “She truly exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete as she is not only a leader on the field but in the classroom as well.
