WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon University women’s track and field team saw four of its athletes claim event titles on the second and final day at the Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 5, at Zable Stadium on the campus of William & Mary.
Coralea Geraniotis won her second league championship of the meet with her victory in the 5,000-meters while senior Emily Dixon won her fourth straight heptathlon title. Melissa Anastasakis became the second Phoenix athlete to win the 1,500-meters in the last four seasons while Bryanna Hames rounded out Elon’s medalist honors with her win in the discus.
Elon closed out the CAA Championships as the runner-up for the second straight season as the Phoenix was just edged out for the team title by Northeastern. The Huskies posted 150 points to earn its first-ever CAA title on the women’s side while Elon had 148.5 points at the very competitive meet. Defending champion Towson (136 points), Delaware (116.5 points) and host William & Mary (105 points) rounded out the top-five team scores.
Geraniots won the 5,000-meters with a time of 17:18.21 to earn her second CAA championship of the weekend after also claiming the 10,000-meters the day before. Anastasakis was fourth in the race with her time of 17:38.33 while senior Corey Weiss also scored for the Phoenix with her time of 17:47.34 in eighth.
Dixon became the seventh athlete in CAA history to become a four-time champion in an event as the Bath, England, native won the heptathlon with 4,919 points. Dixon closed out the meet with wins in the heptathlon 800-meters as well as top-three standings in the long jump and javelin throw.
Anastasakis became the latest Phoenix athlete to win the 1,500-meters as the Hillsdale, Ontario, native clocked a time of 4:40.54 as Elon won the event for the second straight season and the third time over the past four years. Chelsea Smith was fifth with her time of 4:44.22 while Brigid Brennan was sixth at 4:46.71.
Hames took her first discus title since her freshman season as the Charlotte, N.C., native had a heave of 163′ 5″ (49.81m). Bre’anna Warren was third in the event with her throw of 158′ 5″ (48.29m) to earn All-CAA accolades for the Phoenix.
In the 400-meter dash, Lauren Brzozowski received All-CAA honors with her third-place standing at her time of 55.15, a new personal-best. Katie Arbogast was fifth with her time of 56.19 in the race. Natacha Savioz also received All-CAA accolades after crossing the line in third in the 800-meters. Savioz ran a time of 2:10.22 – the second-fastest time in school history.
Meagan Henderson set a new personal-record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.37, good for eighth in the race. Weiss was fourth overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with her time of 10:58.34.
The Phoenix’s 4×100-meter quartet of Alyssa Zee, Moria O’Malley, Aaliyah Rodgers and Brzozowski was fourth overall with a time of 47.57. O’Malley was later tied for fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5′ 5″ (1.65m). Melody Burke also had a cleared height of 5′ 5″, but needed more attempts and finished sixth. Burke was Elon’s top finisher in the triple jump with her leap of 37′ 2.50″ (11.34m), fifth overall. Elyse King was eighth at her mark of 36′ 9.50″ (11.21m).
Warren was fourth overall in the shot put for the Phoenix with a throw of 47′ 9.75″ (14.57m). Hames also placed in the top-eight with her toss of 43′ 7.25″ (13.29m).
Elon concluded the meet with its 4×400-meter relay team of Arbogast, Henderson, Savioz and Brzozowski coming in as the runner-up to Northeastern with a time of 3:43.59, the second-fastest time in school history.
