Elon Women’s Track & Field’s Geraniotis Wins 10,000-meters; Two Others Earn All-CAA

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Coralea Geraniotis captured the 10,000-meters title for the Elon University women’s track and field team on the first day at the 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 4, at Zable Stadium on the campus of William & Mary.

Geraniotis won her first-ever conference championship to help the maroon and gold score 30 points on the opening day at the league championships. Delaware leads the team scores with 43 through day one while host William & Mary sits second in front of the Phoenix with 36 points. Northeastern (28) and defending champion Towson (22) round out the top-five scores.

Geraniotis clocked a personal-best time of 36:25.05 in the 10,000-meters after she passed James Madison’s Nora Raher in the final lap. That time is the fifth-best performance in school history. Teammate Brigid Brennan also earned All-CAA honors after finishing third in the race with her time of 38:14.48. Bridget Kanaley also scored for Elon after finishing seventh with a time of 40:25.45.

Junior Ellie Bennett also earned All-CAA honors for the first time in her career in the pole vault. The Mountaintop, Pa., native finished third overall after setting a new personal-best cleared height of 11′ 9.75″ (3.60m). Nicole Karabas was eighth overall with her cleared height of 10′ 11.75″ (3.35m).

Emily Dixon currently leads the heptathlon after the opening day. The Bath, England, native, seeking her fourth straight crown in the multis, scored 3,056 points through the first four events of the heptathlon including winning the shot put with a throw of 35′ 9.5″ (10.91m) and tying a personal-best in the high jump with a 5′ 5.25″ (1.66m).

Skylar Barthelmes finished fourth overall in the javelin to start the day for the Phoenix. The Dartmouth, Mass., native had a throw of 131′ 8″ (40.14m) to represent the maroon and gold.

Elon also saw some of its athletes set new personal-records while in the qualifying rounds on Friday. Meagan Henderson ran a time of 1:02.93 in the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles to advance to the finals. Lauren Brzozowski also set a new personal-record in the qualifying round in the 200-meters at 24.63 to also reach the final round.

Katie Arbogast and Brzozowski teamed up to finish third and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter prelims. Arbogast clocked a time of 55.84 while Brzozowski came across the finish line at 56.12.

Four members of Elon’s distance team made it to the final round of the 1,500-meters. Melissa Anastasakis was first to cross the line for the Phoenix with a prelim time of 4:42.86 in fifth. Brennan was next at 4:45.91 in sixth while Chelsea Smith was ninth at her time of 4:43.07. Paige King rounded out the Elon qualifiers with her 12th-place standing and a time of 4:48.03.

Natacha Savioz led Elon in the prelims of the 800-meters with a time of 2:11.62 and was fifth while freshman Gabriela Varisco de Oliveira was sixth at 2:12.62. Both will race in the finals tomorrow for the Phoenix.

The second and final day of the CAA Championships begins tomorrow with field events starting at 10 a.m. followed by track events at noon.
