Elon Track and Field Continues Postseason at NCAA East Preliminaries

ELON, N.C. – Three members of the Elon University women’s track and field team continue their season this week at the 2018 NCAA East Preliminaries at the University of South Florida on May 24-26. The Phoenix trio of Coralea Geraniotis, Bryanna Hames and Bre’anna Warren begins competition on Thursday at the USF Track and Field Stadium.

Elon at the NCAA East Preliminaries
This is the sixth straight season and the seventh out of the previous eight that Elon will have at least one athlete competing at the NCAA East Preliminary round. The Phoenix has had at least three athletes qualify for the NCAA prelims in each of the past five years.

Last season, Hames became the first Elon athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships after the Charlotte, N.C., native finished 11th in the discus throw at NCAA Regional meet in Lexington, Ky. Hames had a throw of 174′ 6″ (53.20m), breaking her own school-record in the event for the fourth time that year. She advanced to the national meet at Eugene, Ore., where she earned honorable mention recognition.

Phoenix Athletes at a Glance at NCAA East Prelims
Shot Put • Bryanna Hames
Thursday, May 24, at 8 p.m.

Hames will compete in one of her two scheduled events this week at the NCAA East Preliminary in the shot put on Thursday. The senior heads into the meet ranked 33rd overall in the East Region in the event with her mark of 51′ 1.5″ (15.58m) – breaking her own school-record in the event at the Raleigh Relays earlier this season. Hames will be the first Phoenix athlete to compete in two events at the NCAA East Prelims.

Discus • Hames, Bre’anna Warren(Western Guilford High School)
Friday, May 25, at 4:30 p.m.

Hames will compete in her second event of the meet in the discus along with Warren as the duo make a return trip to NCAA East Prelims after both qualified last season. Friday will be the third straight year that Hames will compete in the discus at the NCAA East Preliminary as she enters the meet ranked 26th in the East Region with her season-best throw of 170′ 11″ (52.11m). Hames is also coming off earning a Colonial Athletic Association championship in the event after throwing a 163′ 5″ (49.81m) at the CAA Outdoor Championships.

Warren is back for her second overall trip to the NCAA East Prelims in the discus. Last season, the Greensboro, N.C., native finished 42nd overall with her throw of 146′ 10″ (44.77m). This year, she sits 34th in the East Region with her personal-best throw of 167′ 4″ (51.01m) that she established this year at the High Point VertKlasse Meeting. Warren received All-CAA honors in the discus as she finished third overall at the league championships with a throw of 158′ 5″ (48.29m).

5,000-meters • Coralea Geraniotis
Saturday, May 26, at 8:45 p.m.

Geraniotis will make her debut this Saturday at the NCAA East Prelims after qualifying in the 5,000-meters. It is also the sixth straight season that Elon has had at least one distance athlete qualify for the NCAA regional meet. The Orleans, Mass., native will race in the 5,000-meters on Saturday as the 26th-ranked athlete in the East region with her school-record time of 16:19.47, which was set at the Duke Invitational this season. Geraniotis has had an impressive junior season as she also won the CAA title in the 5,000-meters at the CAA Championships with a time of 17:18.21. She also added another CAA event championship in the 10,000-meters with her personal-best time of 36:25.05.

On Deck
Any Phoenix athlete who finishes in the top-12 of their respective event this week will qualify for the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The meet will be held on June 6-9, in Eugene, Ore.
