Seattle Mariners Tab Elon’s Ogren in MLB Draft

ELON, N.C. – Elon University junior shortstop Ryne Ogren became the second Phoenix baseball player selected in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was chosen in the 12th round by the Seattle Mariners.

With pitcher Ryan Conroy also being drafted, Elon has now had multiple players chosen in eight of the last 11 years.

Stated Ogren, “This is an amazing opportunity and I could not have done it without my teammates and coaches. They helped shape me into the player I am today.”

Ogren, a native of Devon, Pa., was a first-team All-CAA selection each of the past two seasons and was on the watch list for the 2018 Brooks Wallace Award. The two-time team MVP was one of two Phoenix players to start all 59 games and has started each of the last 148 games for the maroon and gold. In his junior year, Ogren led the team with a .338 batting average, 17 doubles and 53 RBI. He also hit three homers and was successful on all six of his stolen base attempts. Ogren notched a season-long hit streak of 12 games and reached base safely in 20 consecutive outings. He posted 24 multi-hit outings and had 15 multi-RBI performances. He was twice named the CAA Player of the Week in 2018. Ogren ranked among the CAA leaders in on-base percentage (third, .451), hits (fifth, 74), RBI (fourth), doubles (third), walks (third, 44) and sacrifice flies (first, seven).

In his three seasons at Elon, Ogren owns a .328 career batting average, which is tied for ninth on the program’s Division I career chart. In 167 career games (166 starts), Ogren has recorded 208 hits, scored 119 runs, has 44 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs and 119 RBI.
