Women’s College Basketball has lost a BIG name:Anne Donovan has died, gone at age 56…..

She was a BIG active center for women’s college basketball back in the late 70’s and early 80’s and at 6’8 she could really play/go, having averaged 20 ppg and 14.5 rbg in her college career at Old Dominion University(in Norfolk, Virginia), where she was teammates with guard Nancy Lieberman and Donovan played on numerous US Olympic teams(Gold Medal Winner in 1984 and 1988) and USA Basketball teams, as well as coaching the Charlotte Sting and other teams in the WNBA…Anne Donovan, gone at age 56, due to heart failure….

from www.espn.com:

“While it is extremely difficult to express how devastating it is to lose Anne, our family remains so very grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful human being,” Donovan’s family said in a statement. “Anne touched many lives as a daughter, sister, aunt, friend and coach.”

At 6-foot-8, Anne Donovan never wanted to stand out. But as a player and coach, she bridged the AIAW and NCAA and helped grow the U.S. national team.

Donovan, a native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995 and also was part of the inaugural class of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. She was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2015.
