GREENSBORO, N.C. – A former Greensboro College assistant women’s basketball coach is getting the opportunity to do something she has always wanted to do: coach NFL football.

King, currently head women’s basketball coach at Johnson & Wales (N.C.) in Charlotte, is serving as a coaching intern with the Carolina Panthers during the team’s off-season training activities and minicamp.

King told The Charlotte Observer that it has been an amazing experience for her, as she had always watched the Panthers practice through the fence just outside her Johnson & Wales office.

The Observer asked her what kind of message she wanted to send to other little girls who that may be watching though the fence with a dream of coaching football on the NFL level.

“I just want them to realize if they have a dream that they think is impossible to do, it’s not,” King said. “You just have to keep working hard and anything is possible.”

Even though she has been on the Panthers practice field for just a short time, King has made an impact on the team and even their head coach, Ron Rivera.

“It has been really cool to have Jennifer out here with us, and she has done a heck of a job,” Rivera told ABC 11. “She brings a whole different tone to the practice field as things settle down a lot faster than if I am yelling.”

Primarily, King is working with the Panthers receiving coaches, Lance Taylor and Jerricho Cotchery.

King, who graduated from nearby Guilford College, served as an assistant coach for the Pride for nine seasons prior to moving to Charlotte to take over the Wild Cats, whom she led to a USCAA national championship this past season.
During her time with the Pride, King helped lead the Greensboro women to a 176-70 overall mark, including four USA South regular-season championships and three USA South tournament championships. In addition to their conference accolades, the Pride also made four appearances in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2011, with King on the bench.
