Elon Football’s Cheek Named to CFPA FCS National Player of the Year Trophy Watch List

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Elon University sophomore quarterback Davis Cheek has been named Monday, Aug. 20, one of 36 student-athletes to the watch list for the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) FCS National Player of the Year Trophy.

The CAA’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2017, Cheek completed 190 of his 323 passes for 2,431 yards and 15 touchdowns while also running for two more scores. The Matthews, N.C., native was also named to the CFPA FCS Performer of the Year Watch List last season while winning CAA Offensive Player of the Week once, CAA Rookie of the Week twice and STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week on Oct. 23 after going 13-for-19 for 134 yards and three touchdowns with three carries for 30 yards in a road win over No. 6 Richmond.

Cheek is one of four CAA players named to the list. He’s joined by James Madison running back Cardon Johnson, New Hampshire quarterback Trevor Knight and Stony Brook quarterback Joe Carbone.

The 2018 CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year trophy is a 22-inch K-9 optic crystal tower with eight-inch crystal football on top. All FCS players are eligible for the award. The winner will be announced Jan. 9, 2019.

Elon opens its 2018 campaign Saturday, Sept. 1, with a trip to South Florida. Kickoff on ESPN3 is set for 6 p.m. inside Raymond James Stadium.
