High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind with Week Two in the books:Got any “Player of the Week” candidates???/News on Paige, Pagano, Cuthrell, Hackett, Caldwell, Fritz, WA over BW, EF running wild, “The Million Dollar Play” and more….

Let’s take our look back, back at last night’s high school football games, as we begin to file Week Two of the 2018 season and based on the numbers I saw at the end of the evening, Javondre Paige, from Page was everyone’s Player of the Week last week and if you asked me, he would get my early vote this week, for “Player of the Week”, with 3 TD passes and 2 TD runs…Collin Smith from Eastern Guilford HS last week and now Javondre Paige, from Page this week and how is everyone else seeing it, as we delve into “The Rewind”…..

On Paige, from Page, I’m thinking last week he had 321 total yards and this week he was 320 so that is for sure, being very consistent…

Got the news on Northwest Guilford QB Johnny Pagano with 3 TD passes Friday night, with Cam Cloud latching on to two of those TD tossed from Pagano…NWG topped Western Guilford….

Check this kid out:Kolby Cuthrell(Southwest Guilford HS) carried 14 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cowboys (2-0), who’ve won the last five meetings since losing 66-0 in 2013. Tyree Graham(Southwest Guilford HS) also scored two TDs while carrying 11 times for 43 yards.

High Point Central’s Tobin Dejournette fielded a kickoff just outside the 10 near Southern Guilford’s sidelideline, put the brakes on to keep from stepping out of bounds, reversed direction, made his way through the Storm defense while cutting across the field and went 90 yards for the winning score after Southern knotted the score just seconds earlier….They are calling this, “The Million Dollar Play”….

  1. Just a thought . There should always be both offensive and defensive players of the week .It’s about the total picture . Defensive is always underrated and shouldn’t be.

  2. It makes it tough trying to come up with a Top Defensive Player each week due to the fact that there are not enough defensive stats going around to highlight the defenses’ top players…

If you are at a game and see some defensive players that have standout games that is one thing, but to get the word on all the top defensive games around the area, that is a tough task…

Not trying to make excuses, but there are so many stats on the offensive side of the ball, and the offensive numbers are so well listed and documented, the offensive players and especially the quarterbacks have an edge in the POW races…

The QB’s touch the ball on every snap so they are going to be involved in very much talk when it comes to the offensive numbers….

We were at the game LIVE where the kicker Collin Smith, from Eastern Guilford excelled and we saw his work first-hand, but in the grand scheme of things even in state championship games and All-Star Games, you don’t see many defensive Players of the Game….

Maybe somebody intercepts 3-4 passes and scores a couple of TD’s and they would be a strong candidate, if they were not over-shadowed by something one of the offensive players did…

TD’s, whether it be TD runs, TD receptions or TD passes, the TD play gets the attention at the end of the day…

Maybe it shouldn’t be that way, but it is….

The question that fans will ask is, “Who was your leading scorer/playmaker” and not, “Who is your leading tackler”????

  3. Feb 8, 2016 – Linebacker Von Miller made multiple game-breaking plays that led to turnovers. Broncos LB Von Miller named MVP of Super Bowl 50.

  4. That is good research or work there on Von Miller…I’m thinking one year it was Chuck Howley or one of the Dallas Cowboys, or maybe Randy White, from the Dallas defense that got the Super Bowl Co-MVP…

I can remember days back in day when we scored TD’s on defense in a game with a Fumble Recovery or a Blocked Punt for a TD or took an interception back for a TD and we didn’t even get called by the correct name for supper that night…It was like, “Hey Randy get in here, supper is ready”….

Got to be able to get some of some of those key defensive names and not many of those names are getting tossed around…

  5. With the Heisman Trophy it is always an offensive player like the QB or the RB that wins it..I’m thinking maybe one year a defensive player won it, but maybe one year out of a hundred….Desmond Howard from Michigan, I think it is won it one year, as primarily a return man…..

Sometimes multi position offensive players win it…Combo QB, RB, WR, etc…I remember one year Daniel Downing won our MVP award and he played multi positions…Daniel from Northern Guilford back in the day…

The top defensive award in College Football, what is it called again???? Lombardi Award, Bednarik Award????

    Good conversation….Good Topic…
