Pride Women Get Back In Win Column With Second Half Surge

GREENSBORO, N.C.-The Greensboro College women’s basketball team conquered the Bruins of Piedmont International University Tuesday, 80-66.

Katie Lewis helped the Pride start up the contest with an 8-2 run by draining a three-pointer. Also scoring during the run were Shaiajah Dailey6 (2) and Lauren Jenkins (3).

The Bruins then began to play catch-up and was able to tie the score at 14 with less than three minutes left in the first period.

Both teams battled for the lead, but Piedmont International pulled out a 6-2 run and took an 18-16 lead going into the second period.

Brianna Best battled for the Pride at the start of the period and recorded two layups, helping Greensboro regain the lead at 20-18.

Over the remainder of the quarter, the Bruins outscored Greensboro 12-9 and took a 30-29 lead into the break.

Despite trailing, the Pride found their groove early in the third period and started to surge after Lewis drained another three-pointer to tie the game at 32.

Greensboro never gave the lead back up after scoring 26 points in the third period.

Sabria Joseph began to help the Pride pull away from Piedmont International by starting a 13-7 run with a jumper, which was followed by a layup from A’Liyah Woods.

Lewis then followed suit by receiving a perfect pass from Shaiajah Dailey and draining it from long range.

Lewis scored once more inside the paint and Joseph tacked on four more points for the Pride to extend their lead to 45-39.

Over the last 5 minutes of the third, Greensboro outscored the Bruins to take a healthy 55-43 lead into the final quarter.

Following the strong third period, the Pride was able to maintain their momentum to secure the victory.

“I thought tonight’s game was a very good one for us,” Head Coach Randy Tuggle said. “We had a lot of people contribute. The good thing I see with this team is that there is room for improvement.”

Best and Lewis recorded a team-high 13 points. Also scoring in double figures was Lauren Jenkins (12), Joseph (10) and Nichelle Jeffries (10).
